Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central can be a strong operational and financial backbone. But that does not automatically make it the best mechanism for every part of Quote-to-Cash.
The cracks often appear when the commercial model becomes more complex with:
• configurable products and services
• customer-specific pricing and approvals
• subscriptions, usage or hybrid charging
• contract amendments and renewals
• multi-entity billing and collections
• sophisticated document generation
It can be tempting to keep extending the ERP e.g. Business Central or MS Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations, to accommodate every techno-functional requirement. That may reduce the number of applications, but it does not necessarily create a simpler, smoother or more scalable process.
At Walpole Partnership, we take a technology-agnostic approach. We start with the commercial and operational requirements, then identify which platform should be authoritative (‘the Master’) for each capability. Depending on the business and data model, that could mean combining an ERP backbone with specialist technology that integrates seamlessly to MS Dynamics such as:
• Hive CPQ for rapid, out-of-the-box product configuration
• Conga Smart CPQ for advanced pricing and agreements
• Conga Advantage CPQ for product selectors, contract lifecycle management and document automation
• Billing Platform for complex billing, revenue operations and collections
• Oracle Fusion, including embedded Fusion CPQ, where an integrated enterprise suite is the right fit
The objective is not to introduce technology for technology’s sake. Nor is it to force one platform to perform functions for which it was never designed. The objective is a coherent monetisation architecture – clear system ownership, controlled integrations and a connected end-to-end flow from configuration and pricing through contracting, ordering, billing and collection.
The best Quote-to-Cash architecture is rarely the one with the fewest application names on the diagram. It is the one that handles commercial complexity reliably without passing that complexity back to sales, finance, operations or the end-user customer.
If you’re questioning whether to extend Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central, introduce specialist capabilities, or rethink your end-to-end monetisation architecture, we’d be happy to help.
